The SD Parent Resource Network has developed a series of Parent Guides based on South Dakota State Standards in Reading and Mathematics. Each guide provides the following information: grade level proficiency statements, an explanation of each statement, and suggestions for activities you can do at home to assist your child in learning the skills associated with each area.
Reading
Reading is the foundation of a successful education. Children improve this important ability by reading, reading, reading, and reading some more.
As your child’s reading skills increase have them read to you. Great reading skills come with practice and you are their perfect partner!

Math
Math is everywhere! Cooking, shopping, paying bills, doing laundry; all of these everyday activities depend on good math skills. You can help your child understand the importance of math by showing them how math is a part of every day. For example, if you let your children measure ingredients while you are cooking, you are helping them to understand one of the way fractions and measurements are used in their daily lives.
It is important that parents help their children to see how “school” math is connected to everyday events.

Science
The science standards have five different strands: Nature of Science; Physical Science; Life Science; Earth/Space Science; and Science, Technology, Environment, and Society. As your child advances through the grade levels they learn new skills and are able to understand increasingly more complex information. It must be noted that children do NOT achieve comprehensive understanding of the science standards until the middle school grades.
